About the Workshop

Through this workshop, participants will be introduced to an analysis of Deaf and hearing space in the medical environment and the role of the interpreter in supporting and bridging these distinct spaces. Instructor will discuss the application of Deaf space concepts from the waiting room through the end of the appointment. Additionally, this session will take some time to touch upon the importance of rendering anatomy and physiology in American Sign Language with an emphasis on classifiers and visual representation, allowing Deaf patients a richer more participatory healthcare experience.


Learning Objectives

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Reflect their understanding of Deaf space and how it pertains to ethics and the CPC

  2. Explain how dynamics are impacted with the delicate balance of Deaf and hearing space in the medical environment.
  3. Describe how their position as interpreter impacts the balance of power and language in the medical environment
  4. Demonstrate the use of classifiers in ASL to clearly represent medical concepts to honor and support Deaf space in medical settings

Presenter

Jeremy Quiroga

Certified Deaf Interpreter | Medical Interpreter | National Presenter

Jeremy brings both professional expertise and lived experience to his work in medical interpreting. He began his career in healthcare settings and went on to become the first staff Certified Deaf Interpreter at the University of Rochester Medical Center—a role that shaped his focus on medical environments. Today, he works as a Video Remote Interpreter and presents nationally, sharing practical tools and insights for interpreters. Outside of work, he enjoys cooking, hiking, and gardening—interests that reflect his creativity and connection to the world around him.
